{"id":544,"date":"2013-09-05T20:29:00","date_gmt":"2013-09-05T20:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.seonthemon.com\/wp351\/?p=544"},"modified":"2013-09-05T20:48:53","modified_gmt":"2013-09-05T20:48:53","slug":"meaningful-use-standards-include-pushing-lab-results-patients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.seonthemon.com\/wp351\/2013\/09\/05\/meaningful-use-standards-include-pushing-lab-results-patients\/","title":{"rendered":"Do &#8216;meaningful use&#8217; standards include pushing lab results to patients?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I went in for some medical tests early yesterday morning. \u00a0It has been over a day since then, and there are several questions I wish I had answers for.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My insurance changed recently. \u00a0Has the change registered correctly at the hospital? \u00a0Will there be any mishaps with payments?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>I left my urine sample in a little cupboard. \u00a0The cupboard already had another sample, which had not been picked up yet. \u00a0 Did someone pick the samples up, all right? \u00a0Have the tests been performed yet, and are the results in hand?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Have the results been sent to the physician who ordered the tests?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Will the lab send me the results? \u00a0I would like an electronic copy of the results. \u00a0 They are my tests dammit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Events in the workflow<\/h2>\n<p>Each of these is an event in the workflow that was my tests. \u00a0Notifications about the disposition of these events would set my mind at ease. \u00a0I understand some folks might not want this much information. Well, make these notifications optional; let me choose which ones I want to receive.<\/p>\n<p>When a business process is carrying out a customer&#8217;s business, some events in the process will be of interest to the customer. \u00a0Are you able let the customer choose the events they want to know about, and how they would like to be notified? \u00a0I would not mind a tweet. \u00a0Others might like an email, or a text message. \u00a0\u00a0It is not hard to see that this need is a natural part of any enterprise system, which is carrying out a customer&#8217;s business. \u00a0This is &#8216;<em>user experience<\/em>&#8216;, which to my mind is also, often synonymous with &#8216;<em>customer service<\/em>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<p>It occurs to me that either the lab where the tests were performed, or the physician that ordered the tests could keep me informed. \u00a0Of course, no joy from either party at the moment. \u00a0 Some day &#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>I dug through the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">EHR certification requirements for Stage 2 of &#8216;meaningful use&#8217;<\/span>, and found only a reference to facilities of the &#8216;<em>pull&#8217;<\/em>\u00a0variety. \u00a0 The EHR must allow MU data (lab results included) to be viewed, downloaded, and transmitted.<\/p>\n<pre> \u00a0 \u00a7 170.314(e)(1): \u00a0View, Download, and Transmit to 3<sup>rd <\/sup>Party<\/pre>\n<p>However, these documents are hard to read, and I might have missed something.<\/p>\n<p>The computer programmer in me is a little bit happy I think. \u00a0As everyone keeps saying, a lot of work remains to be done.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I went in for some medical tests early yesterday morning. \u00a0It has been over a day since then, and there are several questions I wish I had answers for.
